Grade 1/2 Butterflies

3 Jun

Over the past month the grade 1/2 class has been watching and studying the butterfly life cycle first-hand. Our larva arrived in early May and we watched as these tiny black caterpillars ate and grew to about 7 times their original size. We made observations about their growth in our butterfly journals. Then the caterpillars attached themselves to the lid of their tiny home. They changed and formed a pupa. Inside something amazing was happening! About one week later the adult butterflies emerged from their chrysalis. We learned this change is called metamorphosis. We continued to watch as our butterflies started to fly around inside our big net and use their proboscis to drink sugar water. Finally, on Wednesday we released the butterflies on our playground. They flew around, but some landed on our hands and on the dandelions growing in the grass. We know that these adult butterflies will lay eggs and the life cycle will continue.
