In December the Grade 1/2 class did a book study on the “If You Give A….” books by Laura Jaffe Numeroff. We studied the pattern and theme of the books and then wrote our own story titled “If You Give a Horse a Cup of Eggnog”. Students had many ideas to share and we had to vote to decide what animal we would use and what we would “give” him first.
Sharing in the process of developing ideas and organizing them into writing helps students when writing on their own. They develop an understanding of where to begin and what steps to take next.
Once we had the outline of the story it was typed up on the computer. Each student illustrated a page in the story and they were copied and bound into books. Each student took home their copy before Christmas. A copy was also placed in the library to share with the rest of the school. If you haven’t done so already, please have your child share their book with you and celebrate their success. It will be a great keepsake of the school year!
